Meet the Doctor

J. Ricardo Compean, MD

Ricardo Compean, MD began his medical career as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy attending school at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California.   He received advanced training as an electroencephalographic (EEG) technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he became the leading petty officer (LPO) of the neurology department.  During his military career, Dr. Compean was considered a “mustang”, a title given to an enlisted person who accepts an appointment as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy.  He was in the United States Navy for five (5) years active duty and in the Naval Reserves for six (6) years. Attaining the rank of lieutenant, Dr. Compean was very proud to serve his country.

Dr. Compean graduated from Mercy College (University of Detroit-Mercy) with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a major in physician assistant studies.  As a physician assistant, Dr. Compean was employed in family medicine, serving the poor of the inner city of Detroit for the Henry Ford Health System and the Lymphoma service at Harper Hospital (Karmanos Cancer Center) in Detroit. Working in these areas enriched Dr. Compean’s faith as well as fueled his compassion. He also had been employed in a private family medicine practice as well as in industrial medicine.

With years of medical experience and the desire to continue his education, Dr. Compean, supported by his wife, Cynthia, and their four children, decided to attend medical school at the University of Health Sciences Antigua School of Medicine, graduating June of 2005, with a Doctor of Medicine degree.  He was recognized for attaining an honors grade for clerkship at the medical school graduation.  Mercy Health Partners Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Vincent’s Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio, welcomed Dr. Compean into the Residency Program in August of 2005, graduating August 24, 2008.  During his tenure as a resident, Dr. Compean served as the associate chief resident during his second year of residency and chief resident during his third year.  He received awards for academic excellence as well as leadership.

Dr. Compean has been a Monroe County Community supporter since moving his family to Monroe in 1993. Two of his four children were born in Monroe, and this is where he and Cynthia have called home. He has served as an assistant Cub Scout leader and T-ball coach for his son, and has been a member of the St. John Catholic Church for over 20 years. Currently, he is the Chair of the Family Medicine Department and is on the Board of Directors for ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. He loves serving the Monroe County community as a hometown family physician.

Realizing their dream in 2008, Dr. Compean and Cynthia Compean established Compean Family Medicine, PLLC in Monroe.  Dr. Compean’s goal is to maintain a patient-centered practice where the focus is providing compassionate medical care where he will listen to your concerns.  As a family medicine doctor, Dr. Compean is not limited to a specific patient population, but rather care for patients of all generations and will treat a variety of medical conditions such as but not limited to, diabetes, high blood pressure, COPD, asthma and more. With his up-to-date knowledge, high quality and comprehensive medical care, Dr. Compean is committed to your good health!
